How long does it take to walk the Bibbulmun Track?
End-to-end, the Bibbulmun Track is 1,000 km and takes most hikers six to eight weeks — typically 45 to 60 days of walking, averaging 15 to 22 km a day, plus rest days in towns along the way. Fast, experienced hikers occasionally finish in five weeks; more relaxed walkers stretch it to nine or ten.
You do not have to walk it in one push. Roughly two out of three people on the track are section hikers, tackling the Bibbulmun a week or a long weekend at a time over many years. Popular section lengths are 2–3 days (a single hut-to-hut loop), 5–7 days (a town-to-town leg) or 10–14 days (a full southern chunk with a food drop in the middle).
As a rule of thumb: allow one day per 18 km, add a rest day every 5–6 walking days, and budget an extra day for weather at each end.
Breaking the southern Bibbulmun into sections
The southern half of the track — Dwellingup down through Balingup, Donnelly River, Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole to Denmark and Albany — is the greener, quieter, more forested stretch. It's where most first-time section hikers start.
From Balingup, the natural section breaks are: Dwellingup to Balingup (about 6 days through jarrah forest), Balingup to Donnelly River (2 days, a gentle introduction), Donnelly River to Pemberton (5–6 days through karri giants), Pemberton to Northcliffe (3–4 days), and Northcliffe to Walpole (7–9 days, including the famous Long Gully bridge).
Each of those endpoints has road access, which means each is a workable shuttle pickup or drop-off point.
Shuttle options from Balingup and the southern trailheads
We run private shuttles from Balingup to every accessible southern trailhead — Dwellingup, Donnelly River Village, Pemberton, Northcliffe, Walpole and points in between. Because we live on the track, we can usually meet you within an hour of most southern trailheads without a big detour.
The three most common shuttle patterns we run are: drop-offs (you finish back where your car is parked), one-way shuttles from your finish trailhead to your start (so you can walk toward your car), and car relocations (we move your vehicle to your finish point while you walk).
Hikers often combine an airport transfer with a trailhead drop-off — we collect you from Perth or Busselton Airport, stop for lunch on the way down, and deliver you straight to Kalamunda, Dwellingup or Balingup ready to start walking.
Food drops: how they actually work
Once a section stretches past four or five days, resupply matters. Carrying nine days of food is possible; enjoying it is another thing. A mid-walk food drop lightens your pack and gives you something to look forward to.
The mechanics are simple. Pack your resupply into a single sturdy tub or dry bag labelled with your name and the drop date. Drop it off with us in Balingup (or post it ahead), and we'll meet you at a road-accessible campsite or town on the agreed day with the box, a coffee, and any extras you've asked us to pick up in town.
Common food-drop points on the southern track include Donnelly River Village, Pemberton, Northcliffe and Peaceful Bay. We'll help you pick the one that fits your pace.
Booking timeline and what to send us
For September–November and March–May (the two busiest windows), aim to lock in shuttles 3–4 weeks ahead. Groups of four or more benefit from booking earlier. Winter and mid-summer are usually easier at shorter notice.
When you get in touch, the details that help us give you a straight answer the same day are: your dates, party size, number of packs, start and finish trailheads, whether you'd like a food drop, and any car relocation. If you're not sure yet, that's fine — send what you have and we'll shape a plan with you.

Local tips
Little things that make a big difference
- Average 18 km a day when planning — it's honest, and it leaves room for weather and photos.
- Water is generally reliable at track shelters in the south, but always check the Foundation's water report before you head out.
- Post your food drop to us at least a week before your start date if you're flying in — we'll confirm it's arrived safely.
- Leave a set of clean clothes, thongs and a treat at our place for the finish. It's a tiny thing that makes a huge difference at the end.
Whether you're planning two days or two months on the Bibbulmun, we'll help you line up the logistics so the walking is the only thing you have to think about. Send us your dates and rough plan — we'll come back to you personally.
